Belle Isle Park

Detroit, MI, USA

Project Description

WTA ARCHITECTS used their historic preservation expertise to develop a new accessible sloped walk at the James Scott Memorial Fountain located in Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan.

The fountain is a work of art and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Because of this the project required the team knowledge of the strict requirements set forth by this prominent list of historic structures.

Included in this project was the selective concrete sidewalk replacement throughout Belle Isle, approximately ten (10) main areas.

Other work performed on Belle Isle was the restoration of the Internal Affairs Building and adaptive reuse of the facility as new offices for the Department of Natural Resources who will relocate from their current location on Belle Isle. The building will house ten to twelve DNR staff members.

Restoration is also currently taking place on the historic Athletic Shelter. Items being addressed are removal and replacement of the roof, restoration of the Cupola, gutter, fascia and soffits as well as replacement of the veranda decking and railing.
