Handley Elementary School

Saginaw, MI, USA

Project Description

Part of a $99.9 Million Bond Program. Handley Elementary is the home of the gifted and talented program offered by Saginaw Public Schools. Our design team was tasked with creating a new home that was inspiring, engaging, and adaptive.

Looking to create a leading-edge facility, the exterior façade utilizes color and unique design elements to bring in natural light through clerestory windows in the corridors as well as giving an iconic look for an elementary school. A new secure entrance provides security for all students.

Utilizing the building as a learning tool was identified early on as a key part of the mission to create an inspiring atmosphere for learning for the students. Exposed mechanical systems and electrical raceways bring intrigue and understanding of what is needed for a building to operate. To facilitate the ever-changing educational opportunities at Handley elementary school all classrooms are attached to a commons space off the corridor via garage doors to promote a free flow from the classroom to the corridor and creating opportunities to expand programming beyond the classroom. These programs were supplemented by a new Gymnasium/Auditorium, Media Center, S.T.E.M. classroom, and Cafeteria.
