Project Description
Midland County Educational Service Agency serves as a hub for all the schools in Midland County who need specialized assistance for students that may have difficulty thriving in a traditional learning environment. Our design team was tasked with taking their existing 50,000sf facility dating back to 1918 and transforming it into something that can work for their current needs. Our team started by developing the vision with various groups including the teachers, students, faculty, and parents to understand what the true needs were that needed to be addressed. Once this was completed, we identified 12 goals for what would make this project successful. A new inviting entrance for the public provides security and welcoming environment for students and visitors, with security being the top priority. With the unique program offered, durability was important as well as a feeling of home. With this the design team utilized durable, cleanable finishes that were also soft to the touch throughout the entire facility. Spacious classrooms lead to a wide corridor space that provides a transition space between classroom space and the Quiet rooms to calm students down. To get some exercise throughout the day, the Wellness room provides a climbing wall, and sensory swings allow the students to release energy throughout the day. The administration area was transformed into an open office environment with drop-in conference spaces throughout. The Gymnasium received a refresh with new basketball goals and acoustic treatments.
