St. Joseph County Courthouse

Centreville, MI 49032, USA

Project Description

The historic St. Joseph County Courthouse was rehabilitated for use as county administrative offices. Court functions had been removed from the building

when a new courts building was constructed adjacent to it. Rehabilitation of the courthouse was undertaken as a team effort with the county hiring the Architect and Construction Manager as a team. This proved to be a very successful approach as the team worked together from the onset reviewing options and making decisions with the Owner. This resulted in a project that was completed on time and within the budget. Rehabilitation was done in a way that completely respected the historic character of the building while meeting current functional requirements.

The completed project was greatly enhanced with historic light fixture replications. Decorative painting was reinstated in public spaces to further complement the restoration. Over 100 pieces of antique furniture were restored and placed as functioning furniture in the courthouse. This project won the 2001 Michigan Historic Preservation Network Government/Institution Award.
