State Theatre

Bay City, MI, USA

Project Description

The State Theatre in Bay City was originally constructed as a Victorian Theatre in the late 1800’s. It was purchased by Butterfield Theaters and renovated in 1920. The renovation was designed by C.H. Crane in the Mayan Style. It is one of a few remaining Mayan Theaters.

The State, a one screen theater with seating for approximately 550 was privately owned and was struggling to remain open when it was purchased by a newly formed non-profit with the intent of revitalizing the theater. The non-profit group started with a loan from the DDA to install a new roof to make the building watertight. WTA became involved at this time providing architectural services and preparing a feasibility study.

WTA also completed a study and restoration of the theatre’s exterior masonry facade.
