Project Description
T. L. Handy Middle School was constructed as a high school in 1929. Numerous additions over the years expanded the building to 192,242 s.f. The building was converted to a middle school in 1992 and continues to serve
that use today.
The 2006 bond issue addressed major functional and physical issues. The project expanded the building by another 2,168 s.f. to create a new kitchen. Completed in 2009 at a cost of $14.5 million, the project involved substantial masonry restoration, new historically correct, energy efficient windows and new entrances.
Interior renovations included a new, energy efficient HVAC system, major electrical upgrades including energy efficient lighting and building wide technology. Science facilities underwent extensive remodeling as did the “exploratory” wing. The office area was completely reconfigured to a centralized location providing convenient access for staff, students, parents and visitors. All educational spaces were extensively upgraded.
The project incorporated sustainable design practices as practical cost savings, energy conservation and teaching tools.
